Academic Research Track

The Academic Research Track (ART) will provide selected students, strongly motivated to pursue an academic career in medicine that encompasses research, with a broad and deep exposure to basic, clinical, educational or translational research, involving both didactic and mentored research experiences through an enriched medical school curriculum.

Student Enrichment Programs

A wide variety of student enrichment programs complement the formal medical school curriculum. These experiences include:

Pathway Enrichment Program

The Pathway program provides medical students with an enriched experience throughout their four years of medical school in several areas.

PATHWAY: HUMANITIES AND/OR CLINICAL ETHICS

Objectives: The Pathway program provides medical students with an enriched experience in clinical ethics and humanities throughout their four years of medical school. Students with particular interests in humanities, social medicine, and/or clinical ethics will have diversified opportunities in a variety of clinical and research activities, as well as special events and competitive awards.

Mentoring Program: Each student will be paired with a clinician or an academic with expertise in medical ethics or medical humanities.

Program Components: Independent Research Project: Students are required to complete an independent research project, or develop a curricular component (elective or seminar) supervised by any medical humanities faculty, or ethics consultation faculty, or other faculty approved by this Division and completed during the fourth year.

Admissions to Pathway Program: The Clinical Ethics and Humanities Pathway is open to all medical students who have been accepted at URMC, and who have a strong interest in clinical ethics and /or humanities.

PATHWAY: DEAF HEALTH (LANGUAGE, CULTURE, AND HEALTHCARE)

Description: The Deaf Health Pathway is an initiative of the Division of Medical Humanities to address the educational needs of medical students with regards to awareness of the Deaf community. This series of coursework was initiated in Spring 2004, and has been very successful.

Students take medical humanities seminars focusing on Deaf health and culture, as well as participate in self-designed electives relating to Deaf issues. The American Sign Language (ASL) instructor for the seminars is Deaf and has lots of experience teaching hearing students ASL. There are two options for the Deaf Health Track, one for those who have had ASL experience before, and one for those who have not had ASL experience before.

PATHWAY: LATINO HEALTH (LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND MEDICINE)

Objectives:
• To provide a venue in which students can achieve sufficient language proficiency, to work productively in a health care setting, both locally and abroad.
• To create a stronger link between students at the University of Rochester and the local Latino community.
• To provide opportunities for clinical electives locally and internationally in Spanish speaking countries.

Requirements: The Latino Pathway is composed of three parts: language, culture and outreach. All three components must be fulfilled to satisfy the requirements of this Pathway. Although students enter medical school with varying levels of Spanish language proficiency, cultural competency must be attained. Therefore, students may place out of the language components in the first two courses, but will still be required to fulfill the learning objectives for the cultural and outreach components of the pathway. Students that attain an advanced placement with respect to Spanish language will supplement their pathway requirements through additional outreach or aiding in course instruction.
