Welcome! The University of Rochester/Highland Hospital Department of Family Medicine is ranked in the top 20 Residency programs in the country by US News & World Report.
Our teaching programs include:
Residency Education – We have a 35-year history of providing excellent training in Obstetrics, Medicine, and Pediatrics, and we offer one of the most comprehensive programs in the country in Psychosocial Medicine. While we are proud of the overall balance of the program, there are a number of areas which we believe distinguish it, including our Inner City Track, fourth-year Chief Residents, the Psychosocial Medicine Program, our Community Medicine Program, Obstetrics, and the Global Health Track.
Predoctoral Education – Undergraduate medical education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine has long been informed by a strong tradition of biopsychosocial medicine in Rochester. Recognizing the rapid evolution of biomedical knowledge and the need for students to develop skills of lifelong learning, the medical school launched its Double Helix Curriculum in 1999. Implementation of this model has led to continued active evaluation of curricular changes and directions, as well as the development of new assessment models. The goals and values that have shaped these innovations are aligned with those of the Department of Family Medicine. Several department faculty have been instrumental in this process of change and continue to participate actively in predoctoral education throughout the four years of medical student education at UR.
Fellowship Education – The goal of our Fellowship Program is to collaborate with nationally and internationally renowned faculty mentors in developing educators, researchers, and future academic leaders in Family Medicine. Our fellows learn more about the biopsychosocial model and family-oriented, patient-centered health care. Course work includes evidence-based medicine, research methods, teaching and learning, family systems medicine, motivational approaches to behavior change, and reflective practice. Our fellows also participate in scholarly or research projects, give presentations at national meetings, and publish papers.
There is a lot of change on the horizon as we continue to create exciting and innovative programs. Our Residency website is the best place for a sneak preview.
