Our Trainees
Highland Family Medicine is the clinical practice of the Department of Family Medicine of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and proudly serves as a training site for physician residents, fellows, nurse practitioner residents, medical students, and behavioral health fellows. As a recognized leader in our field, we benefit from attracting an accomplished group of trainees from all over the country.
Residents are clinicians who have finished their degree (MD, DO or NP) at an accredited institution and have chosen to continue their training in the specialty of Family Medicine. They are closely supervised by board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners who hold faculty positions at the University of Rochester.
Fellows are clinicians who have completed residency and are pursuing advanced training in a specialized area of Family Medicine such as Sports Medicine or Maternity Care. Behavioral Health Fellows have graduated from their institution and instead of immediately going on to practice, have chosen to learn about the integration of behavioral and physical healthcare.
Being cared for by trainees offers several advantages. Your care will be reviewed and discussed with a supervising family medicine educator. This means you benefit from the combined expertise of both a resident or fellow and a faculty who collaboratively develop your care plan. Additionally, by receiving care here, you contribute to the education and training of future clinicians, playing a vital role in advancing the field of medicine.
Preventative Care
Highland Family Medicine offers “well visits” for every age. These are visits focused on keeping folks healthy: delivering recommended interventions that include screenings and vaccinations. No longer necessarily a head-to-toe physical exam, we emphasize the things that have been shown to reduce your risk of serious or chronic disease.
From birth on, there is a recommended schedule of visits that are frequent at first and space out with age. For adults, annual or bi-annual visits are typically covered by insurance. Medicare has its own special recommended preventive visit called a Medicare Wellness Exam.
When you are here for a “well visit” and wish to discuss a specific health concern, the clinician may ask you to schedule a separate appointment to have the time to fully address your concern. If able, the clinician will try to address the concern in the same visit, but please be aware that it may result in an additional charge.
We offer special sessions for:
If you are pregnant now or planning your pregnancy, our team can help you at every step of the way. Highland Family Medicine provides comprehensive prenatal care services, caring for you throughout your pregnancy, during your delivery at Highland Hospital, and after you are back home. You will be cared for by a small group of trained family medicine clinicians who will also attend your labor and delivery at Highland Hospital. Our team includes surgically trained family physicians who can offer cesarean delivery if needed. When your baby comes home, Highland Family Medicine can continue to care for them in the context of your family.
Highland Family Medicine is proud to offer Centering Pregnancy® as an option for your prenatal care. Coordinating groups of 6-8 patients and their support people who meet regularly to learn and receive their pregnancy care together. Providing care in this way has been shown to reduce preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and improve patient satisfaction with their birth experience. Members of the group form lasting friendships and serve as resources for each other.

If your concern requires specialist evaluation, we are able to refer and collaborate with specialists in our Rochester community.
Highland Family Medicine is the host for the University of Rochester Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program. Our sports medicine physicians provide care for acute injuries, such as fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains as well as chronic problems like arthritis and tendonitis. They also work with athletes to address medical conditions such as concussions as well as the range of physical ailments. Because the sports medicine fellows are supervised by subspecialty trained physicians with expertise in sports medicine and the care of musculoskeletal problems, our patients get the benefit of that know-how without an additional trip to the subspecialist’s office.
Family doctors do joint injections, skin biopsies, long acting birth control, toenail removals, cyst removals, and much more! Our HFM Procedure clinic occurs weekly on Monday evenings. If you have a concern that you think may require a procedure, we recommend that you see your primary clinician at Highland Family Medicine. They can refer you to the procedure clinic or provide other appropriate care.
We Highland provide outpatient treatment for patients with stable opioid use disorder, including treatment with Buprenorphine (Suboxone or similar medications). This program is for patients who have completed a Substance Use Disorder treatment program, and who are currently being prescribed Buprenorphine (Suboxone or similar medications), related to Opioid Use Disorder, not chronic pain. We also offer Sublocade, which is the injectable monthly form of buprenorphine through partnership with Highland South Wedge Pharmacy.
