Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center of Upstate New York (FLGEC-UNY)
The Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center of Upstate New York (FLGEC-UNY) consists of public and private health training programs in Upstate New York and is one of the 50 centers currently supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions.
The FLGEC is a consortium anchored by the University of Rochester with its strengths in geriatric medicine, emergency care, and developmental disabilities. Ithaca College, shares its resources in rural aging and allied health. The State University of New York at Brockport, has a unique collaborative program in social work. The New York Chiropractic College is the region's premier chiropractic training institution. The State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica, a regional center for nurse training at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The mission of the FLGEC-UNY is to improve the health care delivered to older adults through enhanced geriatric education of health and allied health professionals. The FLGEC-UNY focuses on competency building in geriatrics through curriculum development, linkage building, and education of health professionals and faculty. Responding to stated community needs, seven education projects target the following areas:
- interdisciplinary training
- emergency medical service
- practitioners serving developmentally disabled older adults
- rural aging practitioners
- nursing
- social work
- chiropractic education
The number of professionals trained has increased dramatically over recent years, a testament to both the intense demand for quality continuing geriatric education in the region and to the commitment of the FLGEC-UNY to build new relationships with organizations that serve older adults. The center has demonstrated a track record of success with institutionalization of products and self-sufficiency. New linkages with health care providers, government entities and educational institutions, have been forged above and beyond that which was originally mandated in the original HRSA application.
These linkages include a first-ever coalition agreement with the Consortium of New York GECs and the Long Island GEC to share educational resources and faculty; collaboration with the state-wide area health education center through Ithaca College to extend rural geriatric education; and partnering with the New York State Office for the Aging on administration of aging funded performance outcome measurement project. In order to meet the evolving needs of the Upstate New York region, the FLGEC-UNY continues to expand its geographic support area beyond its current coverage. The counties served by the FLGEC-UNY require specially targeted educational interventions that take advantage of the strengths of the region explicitly detailed under each project.
