Hospital Medicine Division faculty oversee the delivery of comprehensive hospital medicine to a large and diverse group of patients at Strong Memorial Hospital. The division attends or consults on a daily inpatient census of 70-100 patients. Members of the division made nearly 32,000 inpatient visits in the past year. We currently staff the hospital with 7 full-time hospitalists on weekdays and 5 on weekends.
To ensure that our patients receive comprehensive and efficient inpatient care, we collaborate closely with residents and midlevel practitioners. The division is currently optimizing its version of an integrated teaching service in which residents and midlevel practitioners collaborate to optimize clinical and educational outcomes of the service. The integrated service involves 8 teams compromised of a hospitalist team leader, an intern, a senior resident, and a mid-level practitioner. In addition, there are often medical students and mid-level practitioners in training on those teams as well. These teams work closely with an extended multidisciplinary group of inpatient providers including nurses and nurse managers, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, speech therapists, pharmacists, and others. HMD faculty and mid-level practitioners are emerging as expert leaders of their impatient teams.
In support of the clinical mission of the medical center, HMD faculty serve in key administrative roles such as floor medical directors, associate residency program directors, and medical student clerkship directors. Many serve on important hospital and departmental committees.
