How do you tell people about the largest department within a thriving medical center? By talking about the many remarkable things that are happening here.
The Department of Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry comprises nearly 300 faculty who work in 10 units devoted to patient care, research and education.
Our goals and missions are lofty ones, and you can read about them here. But great missions should always lead to great achievements. The following are just a few of them:
- We provide care in all internal medicine subspecialties. Any procedure that is available at any of the top medical centers in the country is also available here.
- We have one of the country's most respected residency programs, one that is consistently nationally ranked.
- We were given an unprecedented 5-year accreditation as a new site for projects in residency education.
- Many of the region's medical sub-specialties are populated by doctors who were trained here.
- We have one of the largest basic cardiovascular research institutes in the nation.
- The HPV vaccine, which prevents the virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer, was developed in our vaccine program.
- We developed the national guidelines for implanting defibrillators for preventing sudden death in patients with heart failure.
- We are one of the top centers in the world in B-cell biology.
- We are continuously testing and developing new technologies that show great promise for patient care, like carotid stents for stroke prevention, implantable devices for lowering blood pressure, and cooling the body after cardiac arrest to prevent brain damage.
The Department of Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center is helping to move all of medicine forward—through research, education and patient care.
