Neuroscience Graduate Program

Director Chris HoltWelcome to the Neuroscience Graduate Program

The Neuroscience Graduate Program offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate training in an exceptionally interactive and collaborative environment at a world class research institution.

Our mission is to prepare the next generation of creative, independent neuroscientists through academic instruction, research experience, and active mentoring. The program brings together faculty with a broad range of expertise from departments and centers across the School of Medicine and the adjacent School of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering. Research interests  span all major themes in contemporary neuroscience—from cellular to systems-level studies, basic science to translational approaches—utilizing state-of-the-art techniques.

A trademark of our program is the vast collaboration within and across these themes, allowing students to design thesis projects without traditional boundaries. Students are encouraged to develop expertise in their chosen subject while maintaining a strong general background in neuroscience through coursework and interactions with faculty and peers. We emphasize professional development by fostering strong oral and written communication skills, encouraging participation in career symposia, building a scientific network, and opportunities to present research at conferences.

Joining the Neuroscience Graduate Program the University of Rochester opens doors to numerous exciting and rewarding careers.  Our alumni have gone on to hold leadership positions in academia, medical and research institutes, industry, and scientific publishing, among other fields. Below you will find a pie chart showing the distribution of first positions held by students who defended their thesis in the last 10 years.

Director Pie ChartWe invite you to learn more about the Neuroscience Graduate Program through our website Neuroscience Graduate Program  and encourage you to reach out with any questions.

What Our Students Say...

Photo of Emily Warner

"The strong sense of community is what makes the NGP unique. The connection between students and faculty is something that really drew me to this program. Everyone is working towards the common goal of doing great science and the strong support network every step of the way is what makes the NGP a great place for graduate education. Grad school is a huge commitment, you want to be somewhere that will not only push you academically but support you in all aspects of your life!"
