A Message From the Acting Dean
Dr. Elizabeth McAnarney
I first became a part of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry as a fellow. That fellowship was important in my development as a faculty member. The first Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Nobel Laureate George Hoyt Whipple, M.D., would have been proud of our development. Whipple's vision, built on the theories of Abraham Flexner and secured with the philanthropy of George Eastman, was a school and a hospital under one roof that integrated basic science and clinical practice.
Today, that concept of physically integrating patient care and academics under one roof remains strong. The main campus of the University’s Medical Center, including Strong Memorial Hospital, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the Eastman Dental Center, covers more than 4.4 million square feet of space. The integration of patient care and academics still stands at the core of our School's philosophy and structure. The leaders of each part of the Medical Center work closely together to successfully fulfill our interrelated missions of patient care, education, research, and community health.
The faculty of the School consists of approximately 1,450 full-time faculty members and more than 1,000 voluntary clinical faculty members organized into 37 Departments and Centers. Clinical faculty members provide tertiary and quaternary services to the Upstate New York region and the Northeast, and also provide primary and specialty health care to our local population. They also train our residents and fellows, who are drawn from all corners of the United States and beyond, to be the next generation of practitioners and academic leaders.
In a time of tremendous economic challenges, our research faculty have attracted grants and contracts of approximately $240 million during the last fiscal year, an amount divided almost evenly between basic and clinical research. Our research portfolio has great depth and breadth. We have achieved top rankings in National Institutes of Health funding in biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, oral biology, and musculoskeletal research.
Our student rosters include approximately 400 medical students, more than 500 graduate students, and more than 700 residents and fellows. We train our students to become the fundamental, translational and clinical investigators of the future, maintaining the critical link between scientific discovery and improved health. In undergraduate medical education, the concept of integrating cutting-edge, evidenced-based medical science and the relationship-centered art of clinical medical practice is embodied in our Double Helix Curriculum, which combines basic science and clinical work throughout all four years of medical school—like the strands of a double-helix DNA model. This blend of the art and science of medicine also distinguishes our post-graduate medical education, where our residents and fellows receive intensive, specialized training in virtually all medical specialties and subspecialties.
In my years here as pediatrician-in-chief at Golisano Children’s Hospital and as chair of the Department of Pediatrics, I have seen the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the Medical Center change and grow. This is an exciting time to be at this academic health center as a student or a faculty member. We are moving forward in translational research. We are improving our curriculum and our patient care continually. At the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry we are proud to play a pivotal role in discovery and in helping people to live healthy lives. It is our hope that you will join us in our mission to be forever better. Meliora.
