Leading the Way Through Education & Research

Serving the Community for 100 Years

EIOH Centennial artwork by Lynne FeldmanA Vision Fulfilled

In honor of EIOH's Centennial, local artist Lynne Feldman created a painting-- A Vision Fulfilled-- that symbolizes EIOH’s research, education, patient care, and community service contributions.

“Caring, diversity, science and photography. These were the words given to me as I set out to create this painting. The four mock-ups displayed here are the original plans for the painting and were submitted as possible examples of what the piece would look like when completed. A Vision Fulfilled is a painting/collage with fabrics glued onto canvas and then painted with acrylic paint." - Lynne Feldman.  This painting/collage was made possible through the generous donation of the Gouvernet Arts Fund, Jack and Harriette Howitt, David and Jane Levy, and Cyril and Shula Meyerowitz.

The process was documented on video and was presented as part of the scientific symposium. The painting, available in framed and unframed prints, as well as blankets, are available for purchase.

New Custom SMILEmobile Serves Seniors, People with Special Needs

smilemobileEIOH's new SMILEmobile has had many outings for screenings and treatment, including nursing homes, refugee centers, day care centers, and other places where access has been a challenge.  The new unit is a self-contained, drivable, wheelchair-accessible dental clinic, unlike Eastman Institute’s three other SMILEmobiles, which are trailers transported to city schools to provide treatment to children. The new unit provides special services for adults, in addition to cleanings, x-rays, fillings, sealants, extractions and oral health education..

“This new SMILEmobile gives immediate access to a myriad of agencies, group homes, and special needs centers,” said Joe Lobozzo, who with his family, provided the funding for the SMILEmobile. “Such accessibility has never been offered in Rochester and is rare in other communities.”  Read the full story »

Centennial Fanfare

ESM Sax projectEIOH partnered with the Eastman School of Music, established by George Eastman in 1921, as the first professional school of the University of Rochester. The School of Music composed EIOH’s Centennial fanfare, which was performed by the Eastman Saxophone Project. The Eastman Saxophone Project joined EIOH and our new SMILEmobile for an event at the Rochester Public Market last fall, which included live performances of the fanfare and other music in addition to providing free oral cancer screenings for the community. They also performed at the Symposium and Centennial Gala.

Lilac Festival

Lilac ParadeLilac parade festivitiesChildren squealed with delight and adults laughed as several EIOH dentists, faculty and staff, along with the Tooth Fairy, Tube of Toothpaste and the Giant Toothbrush laughed with them and reminded them to brush and floss as they walked with the SMILEmobile in the parade, kicking off the Lilac Festival. So. Much. Fun.

George Eastman Museum Display

A small exhibit highlighting George Eastman’s legacy on dental health in Rochester and GEMbeyond was on display for several months. The exhibit included two display cases in the sitting room: one highlighting the founding of the Rochester Dental Dispensary and the other devoted to the international Eastman Dental Clinics.

The Original Dental Dispensary

The original Dental Dispensary at 800 East Main Street has been renovated and converted to housing for seniors, called Holly Barone and Dr. OsterEastman Gardens.  The contractor was careful to incorporate elements of the old dispensary, whenever possible. The SMILEmobile will visit the facility.

University of Rochester/UR Medical Center Celebration

EIOH is looking forward to marking its Centennial with the UR Community this Fall.  Check back for details.

Time Capsule & Plaque Presentation

EIOH will be unveiling the plaque that was given to the University by the George Eastman House. The unveiling will be incorporated with the presentation of a time capsule containing items representative of each EIOH Division. A key or note will be “buried” behind a brick near the plaque and the time capsule itself will be located offsite.  The time capsule will be opened in 50-100 years to demonstrate to the future EIOH generations their progress in the advancement of dental and oral health care, research, and education. Date and time to be determined.
