Minor Cuts
If you cut or scratch yourself, apply pressure until the bleeding stops. Cleanse the injury with soap and water. Cover the site with a sterile dressing for two to three days. You may apply an antibiotic cream or ointment (for example, Neosporin or Bacitracin). If you develop a fever or if the injury becomes excessively red, swollen, or has pus, call your nurse coordinator, nurse practitioner, or physician.
Bruises
If you notice that you bruise more easily, bruise for no apparent reason, or that a bruise is large and firm, notify the transplant team. If you injure yourself and the area becomes swollen, apply ice and then notify your health care provider.
Aches
You may experience various aches and pains in your joints, bones, and muscles. You may apply warm or cold packs, whichever you find more soothing. Do not use external analgesics or liniments (such as Ben-Gay or Icy Hot) or lay for long periods of time on a heating pad. If you experience pain associated with growth factors, acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be used. If acetaminophen does not provide relief, notify the transplant team.
