TBS Student Wins International Mini-Documentary Competition

Jishyra Serrano, a student in the UR CTSI’s Translational Biomedical Sciences PhD Program, took first place today in a mini-documentary competition hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American University School of Communication. The Capturing the Future: A Smartphone Mini-Documentary Competition was open to college students the world over and solicited two-minute videos related to natural or social sciences, engineering, medicine and innovation.

Serrano, who studies how prenatal stress and immune factors affect childhood development, was announced as the first place winner at the AAAS meeting today in Seattle, WA, where her mini-documentary was aired alongside other winners’. For winning first place, she received free registration and accommodations at the AAAS meeting and an opportunity to conduct livestreamed interviews of Topical Lecturers on the Expo Stage at the meeting.

Serrano is part of the Translational Biomedical Sciences PhD Program, which is supported under the University of Rochester CTSA award number TL1 TR002000 from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. The PhD Program in Translational Biomedical Sciences provides in-depth mentoring and multi-disciplinary training to lay the foundation for a career dedicated to the translation of basic biomedical research into improved health.
