Fellowships
The mission of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is to deliver “Medicine of the Highest Order” through excellence in perioperative medicine, pain management and critical care, outstanding education and innovations in research. Strong Memorial Hospital has been chosen by the ACGME as only one of eight institutions nationwide to participate as Pathway Innovators in Pursuing Excellence in Clinical Learning Environments; a four year initiative to transform where residents and fellows pursue their specialized training. We offer four ACGME accredited fellowships in Adult Cardiothoracic, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Management and Pediatric Anesthesia. Applicants can choose between a 12 month, clinically oriented experience or a two-year fellowship incorporating a year of research experience and education. Our fellows have had great success in both academic medicine and private practice and leave us with a strong foundation for life long scholarship, professional development and personal wellness.
Adult Cardiothoracic Fellowship
The Division of Cardiac Anesthesia performs over 1000 operations each year, including adult and pediatric cardiac surgery cases. The two CT fellows participate in a diverse case mix including myocardial revascularizations, complex aortic disease, minimally invasive valve procedures (TAVI, AVR, MVR), congenital cases (for neonates and adults) and high risk procedures including VADs, ECMO and heart transplantation. A comprehensive didactic curriculum includes formal weekly fellow education and multidisciplinary TEE and TTE training. Implementation of fellow practice improvement QA projects, faculty research in hemostasis and coagulation, ischemiareperfusion, and outcomes research provides additional opportunities for scholarly activity.

Combined Adult Cardiothoracic and Critical Care Fellowship
URMC Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine offers a combined critical care and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship. The combined fellowship provides two years of ACGME approved experience at one location. This fellowship is designed for anesthesia trained physicians who want fellowship training in both critical care and cardiothoracic anesthesia, and who have demonstrated a passion for excellence in these two challenging fields. Doing a combined fellowship provides you with a host of learning, teaching, and research opportunities to pursue, while diversifying your career opportunities.
Critical Care Fellowship

The Division of Critical Care has an international reputation and is involved in research in the areas of septic shock, systemic inflammatory response, adult respiratory distress syndrome and evidence based medicine. The fellowship fulfills the requirements for subspecialty board certification in Critical Care Medicine.
Pain Management
The Fellowship in Pain Management provides a multidisciplinary approach to the care of both the outpatient and inpatient requiring pain management services. The outpatient facility is comprised of anesthesiologists, physical medicine and rehab physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and neurologists to ensure that our fellows gain expertise in medication management, physical therapy, invasive procedures and psychological evaluation.
