About Dr. Rob

Dr. Charles Rob, a distinguished vascular surgeon and professor of surgery at St. Mary’s Hospital in London, began a 17-year period as chair of the department of surgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in 1960. He was dedicated to amalgamating the surgical residency program on a citywide basis with residents at the Genesee Hospital, Rochester General Hospital, Highland Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, Batavia Veteran’s Administration Hospital, and Willard State Hospital. In 1968, the integration of the hospitals’ multiple resident training programs into a single surgery residency at URMC was formalized. During Dr. Rob’s time as chair, the department’s national visibility in vascular surgery rose significantly, particularly because of seminal contributions by Drs. Rob, James DeWeese, and James Adams.

Charles Rob, MD, Visiting Professor Lectureship

With 11 lectures during the past 14 years, the Rob Lecture has attracted world-renowned speakers in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. As former chair of Surgery, Dr. Rob elevated our national profile by creating the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery alongside Dr. James DeWeese, a pioneer in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. Together, they built the Division of Vascular Surgery and the entire Department of Surgery at URMC.
