“Enhancing My Expertise Through the Advanced Comprehensive Toxicology Course”

By Harshavardhan Lingegowda, PhD, Postdoctoral Associate in Dr. Martha Susiarjo’s lab in the Department of Environmental Medicine

I recently had the opportunity to attend the five-day Advanced Comprehensive Toxicology course organized by the American College of Toxicology (ACT). This intensive course provided a deep dive into the principles of toxicology, the effects of xenobiotics on organ systems, and contemporary toxicological concepts, among other topics. The course was delivered by seasoned toxicologists from various sectors, including government agencies, biotech and pharma companies, universities, and consulting firms. This experience has been incredibly beneficial as I aim to advance my career in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries and prepare for the American Board of Toxicology (ABT) certification.

The course covered a broad range of topics essential for any toxicologist. We delved into the principles of toxicology, understanding how different xenobiotics affect various organ systems. Detailed discussions on specific classes of toxicants and their mechanisms of toxicity were particularly enlightening. The sessions on risk assessment provided a comprehensive overview of how to evaluate the potential risks associated with chemical exposures. These insights are crucial for my current research and future endeavors in the field of environmental medicine.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the diversity of expertise among the experts. We had the privilege of learning from professionals like Debie Hoivik from Akebia Therapeutics, who spoke on mechanisms of toxicity, and Leanne Bedard (from the same alma mater; Queen’s University) from Bedard ADME-Tox Solutions, who covered toxicokinetics and pharmacokinetics. The inclusion of experts from regulatory bodies like the US FDA, such as Todd Bourcier and Owen McMaster, provided a real-world perspective on how toxicological principles are applied in regulatory settings. This blend of academic and practical knowledge has broadened my understanding of the field and its applications.

The course also included practical sessions and pop quizzes at the end of the day that were incredibly beneficial. For instance, the practice exam on the final day helped solidify my understanding of the material and identify areas where I need further study. This preparation is invaluable as I work towards obtaining my certification from the ABT. The hands-on experience and immediate feedback provided during these sessions have given me greater confidence in my knowledge and skills.

Beyond the technical knowledge, the course offered excellent networking opportunities. Engaging with fellow participants and instructors allowed me to build connections with professionals across different sectors of toxicology. These relationships are not only beneficial for my current research but also for career opportunities in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. As I continue to pursue my goal of contributing to the field of toxicology, the advanced comprehensive toxicology course stands as a pivotal experience that has significantly bolstered my expertise and confidence. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to myHub for awarding me a travel grant that covered most of the costs associated with attending this transformative course.
