Admissions
Graduate study at the University of Rochester means engaging in research and training that prepares you for a career in science and technology. We invite you to explore the BGG PhD degree program, our resources, and our community of scientists and mentors.
We welcome applicants from around the world!
Today’s science depends on teamwork and diversity. In the BGG program, our goal is to foster a collaborative environment of faculty members and student researchers working together to advance the field of science. Building a strong team also means embracing a diverse group of students and mentors. Our faculty and students come from over a dozen different countries around the world, and have varied cultural backgrounds. We encourage both domestic and international students with a Bachelor or Masters degree, or their international equivalent, to apply.
What are the qualities of a successful PhD candidate?
Every BGG program PhD graduate is unique, just as the novel discoveries that they contribute to the field of science are unique. Though there are many qualities that go into the making of a successful PhD candidate, some characteristics are shared by all our students and faculty: an open mind to new ideas, the commitment to make every moment count in both the classroom and the lab, and a hunger to learn and grow our knowledge and skill sets.
Candidates that have demonstrated their interest in science, both in their course work and through seeking out research opportunities, will be given preference. A solid foundation in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology will also prepare students for our rigorous training program.
What are the Admissions prerequisites?
We take a holistic approach to understanding your qualifications and your goals. There are some important requirements for your application. These include a transcript of your undergraduate training and at least three reference letters. We have waived the requirement for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). If you have taken the GRE and would like to submit you scores, we will consider the scores as part of our comprehensive evaluation. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a requirement for applicants whose primary language is not English. When reporting test results, be sure to use the institution code 2948. For a complete list of requirements visit the Apply Now page. Note: Please ignore any mention of GRE requirement when applying to the BGG program. We are working to update the central application web page and process.
How are Admissions decisions made?
Admission to the BGG graduate program is on a competitive basis, and decisions are made by an Admissions Committee. After careful review of all application materials, prospective candidates are invited for an interview that will also provide an opportunity for applicants to meet faculty and student researchers in our program. In addition to prior academic training and performance, your research aptitude, letters of reference, and personal statement will help us select the most qualified applicants. Flexible arrangements in terms of admission, course and rotation requirements can be made on an individual case-by-case basis.
