Veronica Gomes, 1st YearVeronica Gomes

Undergraduate Education

BA in Biochemistry, Vassar College (Poughkeepsie, NY)

Research Focus/Interest

Understanding the mechanisms of genetic dysregulation in disease states, developmental genetics, and stem cell biology

Why The University Of Rochester

The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry offers an academic environment that fosters rigorous research and interdisciplinary scientific collaboration. I was particularly drawn to the program’s strong commitment to advancing medical research through collaborative science and the opportunity to work with experts who are pioneering in biomedical research. The institution also emphasizes building strong mentorship relationships and making important resources accessible for graduate students to enhance the graduate student experience so that we can flourish in our scientific careers.

Advice for Prospective Students

I believe that one of the best ways to make the most of your time at the University of Rochester is to actively seek out mentors and connect with other students in your fields of interest. Attending seminars, staying engaged in departmental activities, and joining graduate student-led groups can open doors to learning and collaboration and foster a nurturing scientific community. The faculty and your fellow peers are extremely valuable resources!

Undergraduate Education

BS in Biochemistry, Boston College

Research Focus/Interest

Investigating the role of transcriptional pause-release factors in metabolically regulating cell lineage differentiation

Why The University Of Rochester

I chose the University of Rochester because of the friendly and collaborative environment that is cultivated by both faculty and students. The professors are committed to supporting the development and success of their trainees, creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that allows each student the time, space, and guidance needed to grow both as a scientist and as a thinker.

Advice for Prospective Students

Something that I’ve found very helpful during my time here is to try and take one step forward each day. Graduate school – and research in particular – can sometimes feel slow and even frustrating, so it is important to remember to pace yourself and focus on small managable goals and celebrate your successes!

Favorite thing To Do In Rochester/Hobbies Outside The Lab

When I’m not in the lab, I love playing tennis or basketball. I also really enjoy exploring Rochester’s restaurant scene with friends.

Undergraduate Education

BS-MS in Biology, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata

Research Focus/Interest

Developmental biology and epigenetics. Understanding how early environmental factors such as the intra-uterine milieu affect long-term health outcome of the offspring. Exploring mechanisms of epigenetic programming and genomic imprinting, as well as how environmental factors influence these processes.

Why The University Of Rochester

An excellent research environment with numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary work, all within a friendly, supportive, and collaborative community. I also love that Rochester is a quiet and small city surrounded by beautiful natural landmarks.

Advice for Prospective Students

The University of Rochester is home to a diverse range of research fields, providing a great opportunity to explore areas that interest you! Don’t hesitate to try new fields that you are truly curious about. Put careful thought and research into selecting each lab for rotations and, ultimately, a lab home. Finding a supportive mentor and lab environment is incredibly important. Building connections within the university community can go a long way in grad school.
