What is it?

It is a surgical procedure that is done when you have disc disease. This can occur from the normal aging process or trauma that causes changes in the bones and/or discs, which affect the nerve roots.  It can also be done if you have narrowing (stenosis) of the space between vertebrae or a protruding, bulging (herniated) disc.

How is it done?

A small incision is made in your lower back in order for the surgeon to remove the bone (lamina) and reach the compressed nerve roots.

What are the risks?

There are always risks with any surgery.  Potential complications include:  pain, numbness due to nerve manipulation, weakness, paralysis, incontinence or impotence, reoccurrence or continuation of pain, injury to major blood vessels, blood clots and infection.
