TRiMAD Mitochondria Conference comes to Rochester
Monday, October 7, 2024
On October 7th & 8th, the 11th annual Translational Research in Mitochondria, Aging and Disease (TRiMAD) conference was hosted in Rochester. The meeting started in Pittsburgh in 2011, and traditionally has rotated between Pitt, Penn State (State College PA), and UPenn (Philadelphia). Our Mitochondria Research Interest Group (MRIG) always has a strong showing at the meeting, so when the opportunity came to host it here Paul Brookes and Andrew Wojtovich took on the challenge. The 2-day meeting attracted 170 scientists from New York, Pennsylvania and further afield (Minnesota, Canada, California, North Carolina). The event also served as the kick-off for the first annual Shey-Shing Sheu Endowed Lecture in Mitochondrial Biology, a new award housed in the Pharm/Phys Department. The inaugural recipient was Siegfried Hekimi from McGill University, who spoke about Co-enzyme Q in mitochondria and aging. The second day's keynote speaker was Elizabeth Jonas from Yale, a frequent visitor to and collaborator with Rochester, who spoke about the mitochondrial permeability transition pore in neuronal function. The conference also featured 12 plenary speakers, with sessions focused on cancer, cardiovascular, neurology, aging, and mitoDNA. Around half the attendees were trainees, with the poster session seeing 90 posters, plus 10 trainee short talks selected from abstracts. Generous sponsorship from several URMC Departments plus outside companies enabled the conference to serve food and drink, award poster prizes. Planning is already underway for next year's TRiMAD, with the possibility to bring the meeting back to Rochester in the future.
TriMAD 11 is coming to Rochester in 2024!
Tuesday, January 2, 2024
The TriMAD – Translational Research in Mitochondria, Aging & Disease – meetings have been held annually (except during the pandemic) since 2010, rotating between the University of Pittsburgh, Penn-State, and UPenn/Jefferson/Temple in Philadelphia, bringing together mitochondrial researchers from all over the Northeastern US. Rochester has always been a strong presence at TriMAD, so it’s fitting that this year’s meeting will be held here, on October 7th and 8th 2024! Our venue will be the Class of ’62 auditorium (capacity >300), with posters in the Flaum Atrium of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. Registration will be very reasonably priced at only $50 and includes breakfasts and lunches, with accommodation available at several nearby hotels within walking distance.
This year’s conference will also be the kick-off event for the inaugural Shey-Shing Sheu endowed lecture in mitochondrial biology. Further details will be posted in Spring 2024 at https://www.trimad24.org.
