Welcome from the Division Chief
Welcome to the Division of Hospital Medicine! Since the hospitalist program began in 2000, our diverse team has grown to create innovative models of care for our adult inpatients, teach and lead nationally recognized educational programs, and move our fields forward with research and other scholarship.
As an expanding group of over 70 full- and part-time hospitalists and 50 APPs, we care for approximately 300 patients each day at Strong Memorial Hospital, a quaternary referral center with a diverse patient population. Building on Rochester’s biopsychosocial model, we partner with our interprofessional teams to provide a comprehensive approach to caring for our patients.
In addition to attending on all patients on the general medical service, we attend on a variety of innovative co-management services with our subspecialty colleagues, including oncology, liver transplant, advanced heart failure, trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and orthopedic surgery. Our bedside procedure team supports clinical care and patient throughput.
Our hospitalists are leaders in clinical programs, quality improvement, education, scholarship, and wellbeing. Our division is home to 10 Unit Medical Directors; the Vice Chair of Education; 2 Residency Program Directors and 3 Associate Program Directors; Directors and Associate Directors of the Internal Medicine Clerkship, Acting Internship, and Meliora in Medicine course; POCUS curriculum directors, and many medical student course and clerkship faculty.
In the spirit of Meliora, our faculty development program supports professional development, lifelong learning and collegiality through mentoring programs, a robust onboarding program, and educational sessions 2-4 times per week on a variety of topics including diagnostic reasoning, POCUS, wellbeing, quality assurance, quality improvement, high value care and clinical pathological correlations. We support the development of educator skills through our conference series and a peer observation of teaching program.
Our group is acutely focused on improving diversity and creating a more inclusive environment for our patients, staff, learners and colleagues. We aim to improve the division’s wellbeing and support the institutional pillars through our faculty education programming, community and institutional mentoring, and quality improvement programs.
