Preparing for a Baby With Challenges

We know you want to be as prepared as possible when you are expecting a baby with an issue found before birth. Our dedicated fetal care coordinator will help you navigate these appointments, answer questions, and make sure that you are as prepared as possible prior to delivery.

Meeting Your Neonatal Care Team (Perinatal Supportive Care Team)

Touring the Golisano Children's Hospital and meeting the teams that will be involved with your care are important to ensure you are ready for the big day. The Perinatal Supportive Care (PSCC) Team will work with you and your family to help answer questions and plan for your delivery. At this bi-weekly team meeting you can meet with the neonatology team, tour the NICU space, and review the plan for your infant’s care. You will also have an opportunity to meet with many of specialists that will be involved in your child’s care and discuss options, care plans, and delivery plans with your team.

If your child’s conditions are expected to be serious, as part of meeting you will meet with the Palliative care team. Often times, these visits can be coordinated with other care appointments for patients that are coming from a distance.

Coordinated Specialist Care

Part of being prepared is making sure that your child’s condition has been discussed by the whole team. The Golisano Children's Hospital specialists and the Maternal-Fetal Medicine team meet twice monthly to review all new cases of pregnancies with ultrasound findings and infants that are nearing delivery. The teams also meet and discuss more complex cases as delivery nears, sometimes running simulations or other drills to make sure all team members are ready for delivery.

Every day, the NICU and Labor and Delivery teams discuss every pregnant person and baby in labor, staying in the hospital, or planned for delivery to make sure that both teams are aware of impending arrivals!

Fetal & Maternal Care Coordinators

If you are facing a pregnancy with a complex condition, just making all the needed appointments can be overwhelming. You are going to need help navigating your visits, questions, and challenges in the days ahead. As part of our care for our complex pregnant people and babies, we have a team of fetal and maternal care coordinators that help to assure that women and their families receive all the information and support they need before delivery and while in UR Medicine's Golisano Children’s Hospital. These care specialists can help with everything from referrals to planning, or explaining complex testing to planning for delivery, and will be your link to the clinical team as your pregnancy progresses.
