Post-Fall, Skier Back on the Slopes
Susan Haefner is a lifelong skier who was glad expert care was close to home when she suffered a fall. The availability of experienced orthopaedic surgeons at Thompson Health was welcome news after a skiing fall at Hunt Hollow left her with fractures in both hands and wrists. She immediately went to Thompson Hospital for care.
“The injuries were so severe that the Emergency Department team set the factures under anesthesia,” Haefner said.
“They told me I would need surgery to fully set and stabilize the broken bones. They recommended Dr. Marc O’Donnell from UR Medicine Orthopaedics. I got an appointment to see him very quickly, and had surgery at Thompson just two days after our first consultation.”
Since the surgery, she’s completely regained fine-motor skills in her hands – crucial for her job as a nurse at a research center, where her duties include infusions and blood draws.
“I’ve been on ski patrol for 30 years, so I know that Thompson is experienced in caring for injured skiers from Hunt Hollow and Bristol. Dr. O’Donnell and the OR team were also wonderful, and I had great post-surgical care from the physical therapists at Omnitech Center in Victor. The care was stellar from beginning to end.”
