Importance of the ABO Blood Group in Transfusion
The importance of the ABO blood group in transfusion—it seems strange that almost 120 years after the discovery of this most important blood group for transfusion and transplantation one should be discussing its importance. But tradition has it that small amounts of incompatible plasma or cells are not all that important. Our research suggests otherwise, and our group is continuing to study the effects of ABO non-identical transfusions on adverse outcomes such as inflammation, organ injury, hemolysis, alloimmunization to red cell blood group antigens and mortality.
