Potential Contribution of 0.9% NaCl To Adverse Effects In Patients

Crystalloid solutions are ubiquitously employed for volume resuscitation and administration of blood transfusions, and the solution of choice has been normal saline (0.9% NaCl).  Normal saline is the favorite of internists and pediatricians, but surgeons and anesthesiologists in particular have always been partial to more physiologic solutions such as Ringer’s Lactate and Plasma-Lyte A.  Our research investigates the potential contribution of 0.9% NaCl to adverse effects in patients such as inflammation and organ injury.
