Dr. Schaffer is a primary care pediatrician who enjoys following children as they grow from infancy to childhood to adolescence to adulthood. He has been privileged to have interacted with some families for many years, having been a part of their lives over multiple generations. Dr. Schaffer likes f...
Dr. Schaffer is a primary care pediatrician who enjoys following children as they grow from infancy to childhood to adolescence to adulthood. He has been privileged to have interacted with some families for many years, having been a part of their lives over multiple generations. Dr. Schaffer likes forging close relationships with his patients which endure as they grow and develop. Dr. Schaffer is also a nationally-known expert about lead poisoning, and he heads the Rochester office of the Western New York Lead Poisoning Resource Center, which coordinates treatment for children with significant lead poisoning and works closely with county health departments, clinicians, community groups and others in our area to help identify children with lead poisoning, educate the public about this preventable condition, aid clinicians in the medical management of children with elevated blood lead levels and assist families who are forced to deal with the adverse effects of lead poisoning.

Dr. Schaffer's primary areas of research have been related to lead poisoning risk assessment and immunization delivery. He has been involved with several research projects assessing lead screening practices and seeking ways to accurately predict which children may be at risk for lead poisoning. His ...
Dr. Schaffer's primary areas of research have been related to lead poisoning risk assessment and immunization delivery. He has been involved with several research projects assessing lead screening practices and seeking ways to accurately predict which children may be at risk for lead poisoning. His work includes efforts to improve the effectiveness of the CDC's lead risk assessment questionnaire in predicting which children have elevated lead levels, a nationwide survey of pediatricians to evaluate their lead screening practices and evaluation of parental views of lead screening. He is also a research director for the Greater Rochester Practice-Based Research Network.

In addition, Dr. Schaffer has led or has been involved in several research projects dealing with immunization delivery, including surveys of physician policies and opinions regarding new vaccines, an evaluation of physicians' adolescent immunization practices, studies looking at the use autodialers and text messaging to remind and recall adolescents of the need to see their physician for immunizations and health supervision, studies assessing the ability to provide influenza vaccine to children in school, a study that evaluated the availability of hepatitis and HIV screening and hepatitis vaccination for high-risk adolescents who receive medical care in non-traditional settings outside traditional primary care medical practices a study looking at enhancing the use of features of the New York State Immunization Information System to assist primary care medical practices in improving their immunization rates and studies evaluating the feasibility of centralized reminders from state immunization information systems to improve rates of influenza and HPV vaccine uptake. He also serves as a content expert for a national quality improvement initiative that aims to reduce missed opportunities to provide HPV vaccine to eligible adolescents.
