Dr. Pisani's career is devoted to preventing suicide, with intervention research spanning the prevention continuum from upstream work in schools and the military to clinical and crisis interventions.
Since 2010, he has been continuously involved in research and advisory work related to crisis care, including roles in national crisis counselor training trials, evaluations of online crisis services, and collaborations with Crisis Text Line. He has served on scientific advisory boards for crisis support services and currently serves on the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Training and Standards Committee.
Dr. Pisani leads large-scale trials testing suicide prevention interventions, including an effectiveness trial of ASSIP for suicide attempt survivors and a pilot RCT testing a novel intervention for crisis stabilization center guests. He co-directs a major research project and implementation scale-up of the Connect suicide prevention program for the US Air Force.
A major focus of his research is leveraging everyday technologies to extend the impact of face-to-face preventive interventions. Projects have included technology interventions in military, school-based, and substance use prevention programs.
Dr. Pisani has gained international recognition for his work in workforce education supporting systems approaches to suicide prevention. He has contributed to national strategies and developed curricula adopted by organizations across multiple countries.
As a mentor, Dr. Pisani supports fellows in an NIMH suicide research fellowship and serves as Academic Chief for Adult and Acute Psychiatry.
