Dr. McAnarney is a Distinguished University Professor and Chair Emerita of the Department of Pediatrics. She received the M.D. Degree cum laude and holds two honorary doctoral degrees. She completed her pediatric residency at the State University of New York (Syracuse) followed by a two-year fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. McAnarney was Director of Adolescent Medicine for 22 years prior to serving as Chair of Pediatrics and Pediatrician-in-Chief at the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong for 13 years. During her tenure as Chair, she oversaw the development of the Golisano Children’s Hospital and growth of the academic pediatric programs. She was Acting Dean of URSMD for nine months.
Dr. McAnarney is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine) of the National Academies of Sciences and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She served as President of three national pediatric organizations. Dr. McAnarney received the 2013 John Howland Award of the American Pediatric Society, the Society’s highest honor.
Dr. McAnarney is a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society. She served on the FDA’s Fertility and Maternal Health Drugs Advisory Committee, several National Institutes of Health special study sections, and the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Infant Mortality of HHS. Her scholarship focuses on the biologic and behavioral conditions of adolescents. Dr. McAnarney is the author or co-author of nearly 150 papers and chapters and is chief editor of the Textbook of Adolescent Medicine.
Locally, she received the Albert Kaiser Medal from the Rochester Academy of Medicine, and the 18th Annual Athena Award from the Women’s Council of the Rochester Business Alliance, Inc. She was named one of 20 Influential Women of Rochester and in two separate years, a “Remarkable Rochesterian” by the Democrat and Chronicle.
Dr. McAnarney has been actively involved in the Rochester community and has served on several boards. She was co-chair of the Golisano Children’s Hospital capital campaign and the University of Rochester faculty-staff campaign, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Nazareth College.

Dr. McAnarney's research is dedicated to understanding executive function and other biobehavioral mechanisms of restrictive anorexia nervosa in adolescents. Better understanding of the etiology of these disorders will allow targeted treatments to be developed.
