Spinal Cord Injury Clinic
The Rehabilitation unit at Strong Memorial Hospital is the only unit in the region that provides comprehensive rehabilitative care to Spinal cord injuries (SCI) from pediatric to adult patients thru the continuum of care based on the principles of the SCI model systems of care in the country. The region's one and only unit accredited by CARF for Spinal cord injury systems of care is second to none as reflected in our outcomes.
In accordance with our Mission, Strong Memorial Hospital at University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is fully equipped to provide comprehensive medical and follow-up care for persons with spinal cord injury. In our catchment area, 1.4 million people reside in and around Rochester. Strong Memorial hospital receives the vast majority of spinal cord injuries occurring within the defined catchment area, and for a number of years our Rehabilitation Unit has received late referrals from neighboring metropolitan areas including Niagara Falls, Buffalo, Jamestown, Syracuse, Utica and Watertown.
Spinal cord injury/disease is a life changing event and results either in paraplegia or quadriplegia with a myriad of problems such as loss of sensory, motor strength, bowel and bladder, sexual function and pressure sores. Our rehabilitation team and its Patient & Family centered care is dedicated to working closely with you to assist in regaining the highest level of independence possible to improve your quality of life and transition to the community.
