Website Privacy Statement

Introduction and Scope

At the University of Rochester Medical Center (“URMC”, “we”, “us”, “our”), we are dedicated to responsibly managing your personal information. This Privacy Statement outlines the practices of University of Rochester Medical Center (“URMC”, “we”, “us”, “our”), regarding the collection, use, and protection of personal information we collect through the websites that link to this Privacy Statement (the “Sites”). URMC includes our affiliates named on the Sites that also collect personal information through the Sites. This Privacy Statement does not apply to any mobile apps maintained by us.

Personal information considered Protected Health Information is covered under our Notice of Privacy Practices and not by this Privacy Statement.

This Privacy Statement does not apply to the practices of University of Rochester, including its collection of personal information through the Sites.

Changes to this Privacy Statement

We may revise this Privacy Statement. Changes take immediate effect upon posting. Check the date at the top of the page to determine if this Privacy Statement has been updated.

Information Collection 

  • Personal Information You Submit: Personal information is information that personally identifies an individual. We may obtain personal information through the Sites (such as when you submit answers to our online surveys, register for events, or sign up for e-newsletters), including name, email address, phone number, and postal address. If you apply to be a volunteer, we may also collect demographic information, including age, date of birth, gender, race, ethnicity, and primary language.
     
  • Information Collected through Cookies: We and our vendors may use cookies, beacons, pixels, and other similar technologies on the Sites to collect information about your online activities over time and across the internet. For example, these technologies may collect IP addresses, device identifiers, referring URLs, scrolls and clicks, mouse movements, and geolocation data.

How We Use and Disclose Information

We use and disclose (such as to vendors, subsidiaries, affiliates, and business partners) personal information at your direction as well as to:

  • Operate and improve the Sites
  • Provide requested services
  • Communicate with you regarding your inquiries and our services
  • Maintain safety and security of the Sites
  • Comply with legal requirements and enforce our policies
  • Support corporate transactions like mergers or acquisitions

How We Use Cookies and Other Similar Technologies

We or our vendors may use cookies and other similar technologies on certain webpages or locations (which may also be tied to certain interactive features) of the Sites for various purposes. For example, to provide functionality of the Sites or interactive features, improve performance of the Sites, support internal investigation into technical issues with the Sites, perform analytics to better understand how the Sites is being used, and in some cases for marketing purposes.

We may also use Hotjar. For further details, please see the ‘about Hotjar’ section of Hotjar’s support site.

We may implement data modification and obfuscation tools to help us limit how certain information may be collected from vendors through cookies and similar technologies. These tools act as an intermediary between the Sites and these technologies, and allow us to adjust how such technologies interact with the Sites.

You may be able to use browser settings to change your cookie preferences, but if you do so, the Sites may not work as intended. 

If you use any third-party tools, including browser tools, to set preferences related to cookies, please note that we do not control such third-party tools and how they function. 

Your Choices

If you receive marketing communications from us, such as via email, you may unsubscribe from such marketing communications by following the instructions provided to you in those communications. 

Data Security

We implement suitable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the personal information collected through the Sites. However, no internet transmission is entirely secure and we cannot guarantee the security of your information collected through the Sites.

Third-Party Links and Features

The Sites may include links to third-party websites and services. These links and services are provided for your convenience only.

URMC does not control, endorse, or take responsibility for any content, products, or advertisements found on third-party websites. We make no representations about the accuracy or reliability of the information provided on these sites. 

Additionally, the Sites may have certain interactive features provided by third parties. For example, certain third-party interactive features may allow you to share content on the Sites to your social media profile. 

The Sites may also include an interactive virtual assistant to help answer your questions. When you interact with the virtual assistant, the contents of the chat may be captured and kept as a transcript. By using these features, you acknowledge that our vendors may process the information gathered during your interaction to facilitate this service on our behalf. Your engagement with the virtual assistant feature is entirely voluntary. 

If you provide your personal information to any third party through its websites or services, your personal information is subject to that third party’s privacy practices.
