Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program
Welcome!
Kathleen Baynes, MD, Program Director
I am delighted that you are considering a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Rochester. Over the past 60 years, we have built a dynamic training program with an array of clinical and scholarly experiences aimed at training expert child psychiatrists in diagnosis, treatment, interdisciplinary planning and primary patient care. Our challenge has always been to coordinate a cohesive training experience that prepares for successful practice in various settings—now and in the coming decades. Integral to this is our commitment to active involvement as consultants and primary caregivers at community agencies. The community-based work that we have integrated into our curriculum exposes fellows to a wider variety of patients and care delivery models, and encourages them to understand the impact of public policy initiatives where they live.
During this two year fellowship, emphasis is placed on learning advanced assessment and care strategies unique to our specialty; these are taught and practiced via a graduated learning experience with increasing levels of independence as training progresses. Trainees become exceptionally skilled at considering the unique context of each young patient’s life—including the family, school, and community in which they live, and appropriately communicating their expertise to helpers and resources within this milieu. Our program is small enough to allow significant flexibility and most trainees use this flexibility to acquire sustained mentorship tailored to their specific interests. The great strengths of our program are its established education focus, varied clinical settings, accomplished and dedicated faculty, staff and students, and warm and connected community. We are glad you are considering joining our team and encourage you to contact us with any questions.
