Community-Based Participatory Research in Cancer Health Disparities in the US and Globally

We elevate the research of health disparities among diverse communities following community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles in randomized clinical trials and have found that: 1) integrating Community Advisory Boards (CABs) in all phases of research can enhance the engagement of understudied groups in research including increasing diversity in clinical trials; 2) culturally and linguistically sensitive interventions have high implementation acceptability and adherence to study protocols; 3) mobile health-based case management protocols can support the engagement of diverse groups in successful behavioral changes and 4) development informed-decision making using mobile technology increases the reach, it is cost-effective and overcomes social determinants of health impact on surgical outcomes. In addition to ongoing projects to increase smoking cessation in the perioperative context, we have extensive research in understanding barriers to smoking cessation and implementation of targeted interventions to increase the success of smoking cessation in diverse populations.
