Clinical Program

Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism
Clinical The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Rochester has strong inpatient and outpatient clinical programs, serving as a major tertiary referral center for Western New York and surrounding areas. We see the entire spectrum of endocrine disorders, including all endocrine tumors, bone disorders, metabolic abnormalities, and diabetes. In addition to direct inpatient admissions and a busy inpatient diabetes consultation service, the Endocrine service assists in the treatment of cardiac, renal, liver, and pancreas transplant patients who are admitted to Strong Memorial Hospital. The outpatient clinic is extremely active, seeing more than 4,500 patients per year. The Division takes a multi-disciplinary approach to all aspects of Endocrinology, working closely with surgery, nutrition, ophthalmology, nephrology, and podiatry services, as well as the Pediatric Endocrine and Reproductive programs at the University of Rochester.

Diabetes Program
The Diabetes service at the University of Rochester School of Medicine includes a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, diabetes educators, and nutritionists, all of whom work together to ensure the best possible care for ambulatory and hospitalized.

Multidisciplinary Neuroendocrine Clinic
Pituitary disease is relatively rare and, given the role of the pituitary as the "master gland" coordinating multiple hormonal systems, tumors of the pituitary gland can be quite varied and protean in their presentation. Successful diagnosis requires the input of both an endocrinologist and a neurosurgeon with expertise in Neuroendocrine disease. In the Multidisciplinary Neuroendocrine Clinic, Laura Calvi, M.D., from the Division of Endocrinology, and G. Edward Vates, M.D., Ph.D. and Catherine Hastings, M.S., R.N., from the Department of Neurosurgery, work with a team of physicians and allied health care providers devoted to the management of patients with pituitary disorders. The clinic sees over 200 patient visits per year from all of Western New York and Northern Pennsylvania. This multidisciplinary approach has not only allowed for better, more coordinated and efficient care of patients, but has also enriched the training experience for residents and fellows in both Neurosurgery and Endocrinology.

Combined Medical/Surgical Endocrine Tumor Clinic
In collaboration with the Department of Surgery, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Rochester Medical Center has established an Endocrine Tumor clinic. Here patients with tumors of various endocrine tissues, including thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal, can receive comprehensive care from the original diagnostic workup through potential surgery and post-operative follow-up. The multidisciplinary team includes Runhua Hou, M.D., from the Division or Endocrinology and Metabolism, Jacob Moalem, M.D. from the Department of Surgery , Ellen Giampoli, M.D., from the Department of Pathology, and Vaseem Chengazi, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., from the Department of Nuclear Medicine . Finally, part of this combined clinic includes a strong thyroid clinic that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid nodules. In this clinic, led by Dr. Alvin Ureles, thyroid ultrasounds and fine needle aspirations (FNAs) of thyroid nodules are performed routinely, offering patients rapid workup and diagnosis of any thyroid abnormalities.
