She leads a research team focused on tic disorders such as Tourette Syndrome. Particular areas of focus include characterization and management of co-occurring neuropsychiatric conditions in tic disorders and on improving identification and diagnosis of tic disorders in children. Dr. Vermilion has published multiple manuscripts on the impact of tic disorders on youth, families and communities; the phenotype of anxiety symptoms and anxiety disorders in youth with tic disorder; feasibility of a biofeedback-based device to manage explosive outbursts in tic disorder; and optimizing instruments to detect tics in children.
Dr. Vermilion also directs the University of Rochester Batten Center (URBC), a Batten Center of Excellence. She leads a natural history study in the Batten Diseases (Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses, NCLs),which has been collecting data on participants for over 20 years. She has also served as PI or co-I on studies involving treatments of the NCLs. Dr. Vermilion has been first author or co-author on multiple publications about CLN3 disease, the most common NCL.
In addition, Dr. Vermilion is a co-I for the University of Rochester NeuroNEXT program. Her focus within this program is promoting and advancing trials in pediatric neurologic disorders.
