- A national leader for education in community pediatrics and advocacy, based on numerous national awards from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), etc.
- A laboratory for original scientific research on community-level health improvement, with articles published in major journals like Pediatrics, JAMA, American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and American Journal of Public Health.
- A hub for connections, outreach and community engagement, maintaining excellent relationships with dozens of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs).

Hoekelman Center Community Health Projects (CARE Track)

The Community Health and Advocacy Resident Education (CARE) Track is an elective two-year longitudinal experience, starting in the second year of residency. CARE starts with a two-week “mini-MPH” block. CARE project areas are determined by each resident's interests.

Health Beyond Medicine: Field Guide for Evidence-based Community Health Projects
Director of the Hoekelman Center, Dr. Aligne, has published a book, Health Beyond Medicine: Field Guide for Evidence-based Community Health Projects, to help others develop skills for implementing effective, evidence-based community health action locally and globally. Topics in this guide include: addressing social determinants of health; partnering with community organizations; predicting health impact of interventions; self-awareness of the culture of medicine; project design and management; evaluation on a shoestring; public speaking, talking to the media and other communications; legislative advocacy and “changing the world” in an hour a month; sustainability beyond grant-writing; behavior change.
