Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowship Program
Our well-rounded 3-year ACGME-accredited program is comprised of one fellow per year under the supervision of 8 Pediatric Gastroenterology Attendings and 1 Pediatric Hepatologist. Our team is a close-knit group that provides excellent care to patients in upstate New York. U.S. News & World Report recently ranked Pediatric Gastroenterology, at UR Medicine's, Golisano Children's Hospital, among the best in the nation. Our goals are to provide comprehensive training, promote the highest standards of professionalism, empathy, and scientific inquiry, and to develop the next generation of academic leaders in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.
Through inpatient and outpatient experiences, fellows develop expertise in the clinical diagnosis and management of acute and chronic disorders of the liver and gastrointestinal system including celiac disease, gastrointestinal allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and metabolic liver diseases. Our pediatric patients include a wide range of ages; we treat neonates, infants, children, and young adults.
Throughout training, knowledge is gained on basic principles, indications, and risks of procedures and proficiency is achieved in performing routine and advanced endoscopic procedures. Rotations with the adult GI service provide extensive experience in invasive endoscopic techniques.

Our Program Aims
- To provide a safe learning environment that expands upon education in a way that is dynamic and comprehensive, thus teaching fellows how to become compassionate and knowledgeable care givers for a career in either academic or private medicine.
- To train fellows to become proficient in research, data analysis and interpretation, and to nurture habits of life-long learning and scientific inquiry. As part of this, we aim for them to critically assess journal articles, thus allowing them to be more successful in incorporating evidence based medicine appropriately in their practice.
- To train fellows to be successful in the ever-changing fields of Quality Improvement (QI) and Patient Safety through a Pediatric Gastroenterology specific QI curriculum which includes applied components/experiential learning, didactic components, morbidity and mortality conferences, and QI mentorship.

A National Leader in Improving Quality and Safety
ACGME has chosen URMC to be one of eight institutions to help transform the way we improve quality and safety. Our fellows play a key role in changing the clinical learning environment here at our institution and across the country. This initiative furthers our commitment to continuously improve health care by advancing the quality of physician education.
What Makes Us Unique
Flexible Curriculum
The Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Fellowship curriculum can be modified to meet individual career interests; fellows have the opportunity to rotate offsite to receive training in highly specialized areas such as motility, hepatology and transplant. Educational activities include didactic lectures and interdisciplinary conferences.
Mentor Relationships
Our Fellowship Directors and Division Chief actively provide mentorship, and a high trainee to faculty ratio allows for strong faculty interaction and guidance. In addition, the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and/or Patricia Chess, M.D., Vice Chair of Education, meet quarterly with fellows from our subspecialty training programs in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance.
Research Support
The Department of Pediatrics provides financial support for each fellow to present at one national conference as this contributes to their professional development and hones their presentation and networking skills. Since accreditation, 100% of our fellows have presented at national meetings and a large portion go on to publish their research findings during their training or within one year of graduation.
