Phosphorous-Rich Foods

Phosphorous is an important mineral found in many of the foods we eat. It works in tandem with calcium—another important mineral—to strengthen our bodies, especially our teeth and bones. Most people consume enough phosphorous in an average diet, but some conditions, such as certain kidney disorders, complications of diabetes, gastrointestinal malabsorption, may cause a deficiency in phosphorous. Some research has also shown that a person may suffer a depletion of phosphorous following a severe burn.

Perhaps your child's doctor has recommended adding phosphorous-rich foods to your child's diet. Following are some suggestions:

  • Cheese (except cottage cheese)
  • Chocolate
  • Cocoa
  • Dark breads
  • Oatmeal
  • Cornbread
  • Dried peas and beans
  • Milk
  • Ice cream
  • Milkshakes

  • Tofu
  • Peanut butter
  • Colas
  • Pancakes and waffles
