Welcome to the Rheumatology Fellowship Program!
We are the only Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship at an academic medical center in Western, NY. We are strongly committed to training future rheumatologists while participating in research, investigating the causes, treatment and prevention of rheumatic diseases.
Our fellows experience a well-rounded patient base and treat a variety of patient needs. Based on our program size, the degree of fellow involvement in each case is exceptional, with the opportunity to lead rounds and perform procedures.
Opportunity for Combined Curriculum
Our program's curriculum focuses on career development and preparation for subspecialty boards. In addition, the opportunity exists for medicine-pediatrics trained individuals to pursue a combined four-year curriculum. At the completion of this curriculum, fellows are able to become dual certified in both pediatric rheumatology and adult rheumatology.
Dedicated Faculty
Our faculty offer fellows autonomy and guidance. They are dedicated to teaching and fellows’ success, taking active roles in clinical and didactic education. Fellows regularly have one-on-one interactions with attendings to support their academic and professional development through mentoring, bedside teaching, and lectures.
State-of-the-Art Children's Hospital
UR Medicine opened a new building for the Golisano Children's Hospital in 2015. Two more floors were added in 2017 encompassing new pediatric operating rooms, a pediatric cardiac surgery center, a gastroenterology procedure suite, and a new pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).

What Our Fellows Say...
I had many reasons for ranking the program at University of Rochester highly. I love the availability of faculty who are well versed in MSK ultrasound and support to pursue US SONAR certification during my fellowship. We also see very diverse pathology in Rochester which has been very helpful for my learning. I think my favorite thing about the program has been the attention the faculty pay to generating a great learning environment for the fellows and the support I have had to seamlessly integrate the adult and pediatric aspects of my training as a combined med-peds rheumatology fellow.

Research Support
The Department of Pediatrics provides financial support for each fellow to present at one national conference, as this contributes to their professional development and hones their presentation and networking skills. The Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and/or Vice Chair of Education, meet quarterly with fellows in an informal roundtable setting to offer mentorship and research guidance.
The Program Director is devoted to the professional development of each trainee’s research portfolio. This close guidance has contributed to fellows consistently obtaining departmental and external funding awards and presenting at national meetings.
A National Leader in Improving Quality and Safety
ACGME has chosen URMC to be one of eight institutions to help transform the way we improve quality and safety. Our fellows play a key role in changing the clinical learning environment here at our institution and across the country. This initiative furthers our commitment to continuously improve health care by advancing the quality of physician education.
