Funding Pathways for Early-Stage Researchers

UR CTSI funding programs create pathways for early-stage investigators to leverage their scientific proposals for further funding from the UR CTSI and NIH. Ultimately, we want to help investigators optimize their proposals to achieve independent funding as quickly as possible.

Path 1: For Investigators Eligible for K Awards

  • Propose new or innovative research ideas at the UR CTSI Research Methods Forum between July and September
  • Expand specific aims page to a full application for the UR CTSI’s KL2 Career Development Award by early November
  • UR CTSI KL2 Award notifications will be sent in January of each year
  • If the UR CTSI KL2 application is not funded, it can be reworked into an NIH K award application
July - September Early October Early November February

Path 2: For Investigators Not Eligible for K Awards

  • Participate in our Research Methods Forum
  • Expand specific aims page to a UR CTSI Pilot Award abstract by September
  • If chosen, expand abstract to a full UR CTSI Pilot Award application by mid-December
  • While the UR CTSI Pilot Award application is under review, applicants can expand this proposal to an independent investigator award (NIH R-series or equivalent)
    • UR CTSI funding decisions will not be influenced by whether an investigator has also applied for an NIH award
May - July Early September Mid-December February or June 16
