An Evidence-Based Program that Can Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Program Overview

The Rochester Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is an evidence-based, CDC-recognized program designed to help people who have been diagnosed with prediabetes prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. The year-long, lifestyle change program covers information about nutrition and physical activity, and how they impact our health and daily lives. The special designation by the CDC is reserved for programs that have effectively delivered a quality, evidence-based program that meets all of the standards for CDC recognition.

The program curriculum is based on research done by the National Institutes of Health. Studies showed that lifestyle changes resulting in weight loss and increased physical activity, can delay or prevent type 2 diabetes in patients diagnosed with prediabetes.

You can help prevent type 2 diabetes in our community.

  • Prevent diabetes and so much more: 100 million people in the United States have diabetes or prediabetes. By preventing diabetes, we are also preventing complications from diabetes such as vision loss, kidney failure, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and more.
  • Feel better: a healthy lifestyle - the combination of physical activity and a balanced diet - is key to preventing type 2 diabetes and other illnesses. A healthier lifestyle can also improve mood and boosts energy.
  • Results that matter: the Diabetes Prevention Program has been shown to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes by supporting participants to increase activity levels and lose 5 to 7 percent of their body weight.
