Birth Control (Contraception)
Make Appointments & Get Care
Overview
Birth control, also called contraception, is any method, medicine, or device used to prevent pregnancy. Access to a wide variety of birth control, family planning, and contraceptive options gives you control over when you choose to be pregnant and have children.
The World Health Organization considers this access a human right. Being able to plan and space pregnancies improves health and social and economic outcomes for patients and their families.
We believe everyone should have access to a full spectrum of reproductive health care.
What Are the Different Types of Birth Control?
There are many different methods of birth control, including:
- Barrier methods, like condoms and diaphragms
- Hormonal methods, including birth control pills, vaginal rings, patches, implanted devices like IUDs or arm implants, external devices like rings, shots, and more
- Emergency contraception
- Fertility awareness or natural family planning
- Sterilization, such as tube tying, removal, or vasectomy
- Abstinence
