Overview

Our Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) consists of the Emergency Unit, extended observation beds, the Mobile Crisis Team, and four crisis beds in the community, which are accessed via the Mobile Crisis Team.

The CPEP Emergency Unit, part of the Medical Emergency Department, provides psychiatric evaluations to determine if inpatient hospital intervention is needed. If so, the team helps with admission to an inpatient psychiatric unit.

What to Expect from the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program

During your stay, you will be seen by a nurse, a psychiatrist, and a social worker. We will gather information from you, family members, outpatient treatment team members, and prior visit notes. Together, the psychiatrist, patient, and identified family member(s) will make a decision about next steps for treatment. Before discharge, the team will provide you with a personalized plan. Secure area CPEP is a secure unit operated under the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYS OMH) CPEP Regulations. This environment is designed with your safety in mind. Per NYS OMH regulations, all patients must be evaluated by a physician before being allowed to leave the locked unit.

Services include:

  • Emergency psychiatric assessment
  • Psychosocial assessment
  • Admission to inpatient psychiatric unit when appropriate
  • Crisis intervention
  • Referrals to needed services in the community for patients being discharged (may include referrals to the Mobile Crisis Team and/or crisis beds)

Based on the evaluations completed, our UR Medicine team will determine the best path forward for treatment.

What Sets Us Apart?

UR Medicine's Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) is the only one in our region.

The goal of Strong Memorial Hospital's CPEP unit is to create a partnership with you based on mutual trust and the shared goal of helping you throughout your stay. Extended observation beds provide the option for further evaluation and monitoring of an individual for up to three days, if determined appropriate and necessary by the CPEP attending psychiatrist.
