Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO)
Make Appointments & Get Care
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO) is used to supplement other treatments for specific types of wounds that aren't healing well. During HBO treatments, the patient breathes 100 percent oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. This increases the concentration of oxygen in the bloodstream, which can help to heal the wound.
This therapy can help:
- Reduce swelling
- Fight infection
- Build new blood vessels, ultimately producing healthy tissue
- Fight certain types of infections
- Improve circulation
- Stimulate growth of new blood vessels
UR Medicine's Approach
The treatment you receive at our wound center is designed to complement the care you receive from your own provider, ensuring that everyone on your healthcare team is working together toward the treatment that's right for you.
If you have a wound that hasn't healed in four weeks, ask your provider if HBO may be beneficial. At UR Medicine, your provider will participate in developing your treatment plan and is informed of your progress every step of the way.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be used to treat:
- Soft tissue radiation injuries
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis (bone infection)
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Diabetic wounds in the legs or feet
Treatment is different for each patient. It depends on the patient's condition and response to therapy. Most patients receive between 30 and 40 treatments.
Over the course of treatments, patients are evaluated to see if the concentration of oxygen has increased in the blood near the wound. If the oxygen level is higher, the therapy is most likely helping.
