Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

What is Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery?

Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries use special tools to perform surgeries through smaller incisions. This approach has been shown to improve outcomes, decrease complications, and reduce discomfort for patients, leading to a quicker recovery.

How are minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries performed?

In the past, some surgeries left patients with large abdominal incisions. Now they are performed using:

  • Hysteroscopy; a small camera and instruments inserted into the uterus through the cervix, or
  • Laparoscopy; a small camera and instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Some laparoscopic surgeries are "robot-assisted" meaning the surgeon manipulates the instruments using robotic arms, allowing more access to difficult to reach areas of the abdomen and better visualization for more complex surgeries.

UR Medicine's Approach

Most of UR Medicine's gynecologic surgeons—including general gynecologists and gynecologic subspecialists—are trained in minimally invasive techniques. We routinely offer minimally invasive options to our patients who need surgery.

General gynecologists and gynecologic subspecialists offer minimally invasive techniques to treat a wide range of gynecologic conditions, including:

Our team also includes gynecologic surgeons who have completed additional training in a Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Fellowship. These skilled providers can manage more complex conditions including:

What Sets Us Apart?

UR Medicine's gynecologic surgeons are leaders in minimally invasive robotic procedures. In addition to decades of experience in these techniques, our experts also have access to the latest technologies and training. We are proud to provide our patients with the best and widest variety of treatment options.

Many of our faculty are involved in outcomes research, serve on national and international committees, and are part of the development of new minimally invasive surgical instruments and technologies. Our nationally-respected residency program and fellowship programs teach minimally invasive surgical techniques to the next generation of surgeons.
