What is Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery?
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries use special tools to perform surgeries through smaller incisions. This approach has been shown to improve outcomes, decrease complications, and reduce discomfort for patients, leading to a quicker recovery.
How are minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries performed?
In the past, some surgeries left patients with large abdominal incisions. Now they are performed using:
- Hysteroscopy; a small camera and instruments inserted into the uterus through the cervix, or
- Laparoscopy; a small camera and instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Some laparoscopic surgeries are "robot-assisted" meaning the surgeon manipulates the instruments using robotic arms, allowing more access to difficult to reach areas of the abdomen and better visualization for more complex surgeries.
