Pediatric Rehabilitation
Pediatric Rehabilitation
If your child is recovering from a complex medical issue, your medical or surgical team may recommend acute inpatient rehabilitation to help restore function and regain independence.
The Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Strong Memorial Hospital is the most established rehabilitation program in the region, with each team member bringing the highest level of expertise and compassion to the care of our patients.
Conditions treated include cerebral palsy, stroke, developmental delay, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, neuromuscular conditions.
UR Medicine's Approach
Pediatric Rehabilitation at the University of Rochester offers evaluation and treatment of children, with the goal of improving function and quality of life.
A comprehensive rehabilitation program is developed for each child. With a team-based approach, rehabilitation physicians partner with therapy staff including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, orthotics & prosthetics, and collaborate with other pediatric specialists such as developmental pediatrics, pediatric neurology, pediatric neurosurgery, and pediatric orthopaedics to work towards individual treatment goals for each patient.
- We have a partnership with Golisano Children’s Hospital, allowing us to provide children 6 years of age and over, and patients 5 years or younger will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with specialized inpatient rehabilitation for a range of conditions. While in our program, pediatric specialists from Golisano Children's Hospital are available to check on your child regularly.
- Our pediatric program offers several private rooms that can be personalized for each child and are large enough to accommodate parents overnight. We also offer pediatric exercise equipment and a private treatment space that can be customized to your child's needs.
- During the school-year, children can receive tutoring while completing their inpatient rehabilitation and our team will assist in your child's return to school planning.
What Sets Us Apart?
The department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation gained accreditation from CARF (Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) and the Magnet Recognition Program (the gold standard of nursing), becoming the first of its kind in upstate New York to be integrated directly with both a Level 1 Trauma Center and a Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. These designations reflect higher patient satisfaction and better patient outcomes.
As part of a leading academic medical center, we track our patients’ results, including functional improvement, level of satisfaction, and return to home. Our results rank among the highest in New York State.
