What Are Polyps and Adenomas?
Polyps are abnormal growths that form on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Most polyps are benign (non-cancerous), but some can develop into colorectal cancer if left untreated.
Adenomas are a specific type of polyp. They have a higher risk than other types of becoming cancerous.
What Are the Types of Polyps?
There are several types of polyps, each with different levels of risk:
- Adenomatous Polyps (Adenomas)—can turn cancerous over time
- Hyperplastic Polyps—generally benign and found in the lower colon
- Inflammatory Polyps—associated with inflammatory bowel diseases and rarely become cancerous
- Sessile Serrated Polyps and Traditional Serrated Adenomas—higher risk of becoming cancerous
What Are the Symptoms of Polyps and Adenomas?
Regular screenings are essential because polyps often don’t cause symptoms. However, symptoms can include:
- Rectal bleeding
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain
- Iron deficiency anemia
UR Medicine's Treatments for Polyps & Adenomas
Screening and early detection are crucial for identifying and managing polyps before they can develop into cancer.
Your provider may use these tests for diagnosis:
- Colonoscopy
- Sigmoidoscopy (focuses only on the lower part of the colon)
- Stool tests
- CT Colonography (Virtual Colonoscopy
The primary treatment for polyps is removal during a colonoscopy or via surgery. Along with regular follow-up screenings, this reduces the risk of colorectal cancer.
