Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary Rehabilitation helps people diagnosed with chronic ongoing lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis, as well as those experiencing ongoing breathing difficulties after having COVID-19.

Although pulmonary rehabilitation can’t cure lung disease, our goal is to improve your quality of life through exercise classes and education about your condition.

Pulmonary rehabilitation can help you participate in activities with less shortness of breath and anxiety so you can live a fuller life.

UR Medicine's Treatments for Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Talk to your primary care doctor about the health benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation. If you haven’t had a recent pulmonary function test, your doctor will schedule one for you. Your doctor will then refer you to UR Medicine Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

We will contact you to schedule your first session. At your orientation session, you will:

  • Meet our multidisciplinary staff, including a registered respiratory therapist for a personalized assessment.
  • Be checked for oxygen needs.
  • Perform a six-minute walk to test your endurance level.
  • Establish your goals for your personalized pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Sessions will be scheduled twice weekly for nine weeks, for a total of 18 sessions. Each will last from 60 to 90 minutes. You will be closely monitored at all times. Staff members will track your heart rate, oxygen levels, blood pressure, and levels of perceived breathlessness.

If you need oxygen, it will be provided for use in our facility.

Our pulmonary rehabilitation program includes:

  • Breathing retraining exercises
  • Exercise machines
  • Weight training with an exercise physiologist
  • Support programs to quit smoking
  • Stress management and emotional well-being support
  • Medication management education
  • Nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian

Our team also works closely with you to create a customized exercise routine and care plan to follow beyond your time in pulmonary rehabilitation. This helps you maintain the benefits of our program long after you finish the program.

What Sets Us Apart?

Most of the patients who complete our program experience fewer hospitalizations and see improvements in exercise capacity and stamina.

Our staff will create a personalized exercise routine, based on your goals and physical starting point.

No two participants in the program are doing the same exercise routine. Your comfort level and feedback are taken into account at all times.
