Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Our fellowship is designed for physicians seeking an exceptional, academic primary care based sports medicine experience. We prepare board eligible or certified primary care physicians to become academic sports medicine specialists.
Our Mission:
Is to train academically grounded and clinically oriented sports medicine physicians who will provide excellent musculoskeletal and sports medicine care, serve as team physicians at any level and teachers in their setting.
Program Aims:
Our program focuses on the development of academic primary care sports medicine physicians by providing fellowship level training to allow for the passage of the Certification of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. Our graduates will increase the local and regional supply of sports medicine physicians. Our faculty and fellows provide teaching in MSK / sports medicine to 7 residency programs (family medicine, physiatry, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, medicine-pediatrics, orthopedics), several fellowship programs (adolescent medicine, rheumatology) and the UR medical school. We provide medical care to the Rochester athletic community including recreational, school-age, collegiate, and professional athletes, teams and events. Finally, our program engages widely in scholarly work including discovery, integration, application, and dissemination and teaching of knowledge.
Building upon your medical knowledge and expertise, your assigned responsibilities will involve:
- Serving as an internal sports medicine consultant at Highland Family Medicine
- Rotations in Primary Care Sports Medicine, MSK radiology, Physical therapy, Physiatry / Spine (including chiropractic), Sports Orthopaedic Surgery (including hip and shoulder), Hand Surgery, Foot & Ankle Surgery (including podiatry), Pediatric Orthopaedics, Joint Reconstruction, Rheumatology, Sports Concussion
- Event Physician for endurance events including the Can Lake 50 Ultra Marathon and Cayuga Lake Olympic Distance Triathlon
- Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and compartment pressure testing
- The fellow will receive Pocus (Point-of-Care Ultrasound) Training through the fellowship and Butterfly equipment will be provided during the duration of the fellowship
- Extensive participation as a team physician including game coverage and training room for a local college and a high school sports team:
- St. John Fisher College Football, NCAA Div. 3 (NCAA Quarter finalists 3 of the past 8 years)
- Penfield High School
- Opportunities for coverage with other colleges, professional hockey, lacrosse, baseball and soccer teams and professional boxing are available, You will attend weekly sports medicine didactic conference and monthly hip, MSK radiology and concussion care team meetings. We have an innovative Sports Medicine in the News curriculum.
