Resident Research
Wondering about opportunities to participate in research in our 
department? We certainly have a track record of outstanding researchers in various areas (see below). The program supports residents each year who we call "Research Track Residents” and they are allotted more dedicated time for specific mentored projects. In our experience though, most of our residents have been productive in scholarly activity in the following areas (which is not all-inclusive):
- Case report presentations at national and international meetings
- Book chapters
- Conference presentations in our department (morning conferences, Grand Rounds, etc.)
- Educational research projects (curriculum design and review, for example)
- Outcomes research projects (assisting with meta-analyses, for example)
- Review articles
And since we take this very seriously, we have even appointed one of our faculty members, Dr. Audra Webber (Assistant Professor & Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship Program Director) to be the Director of Resident Abstract Review.
FAER Foundation Resident Research Scholars
Our department is a member of the Society for Anesthesia Education and Research, and annually, we select a resident to participate in the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER)'s Resident Scholar Program. As so aptly put by FAER, "The goal of the FAER Resident Scholar Program (RSP) is to support research among residents by providing an opportunity to present their work among peers and established scientists in the specialty of anesthesiology."

Department Research
Research being conducted at URMC by the Anesthesiology Department provides many opportunities for residents to get involved. Department research spans from the basic science to clinical and outcomes research. Our faculty conducts research over a variety of domains including coagulation, critical care, pain/regional anesthesia and respiratory physiology along with how molecular science and patient outcomes are associated with anesthesia.
Residents can get involved in research on multiple levels. At a minimum, each resident is required to complete a scholarly project. Many of our residents present these at the annual PostGraduate Assembly in Anesthesiology (PGA) conference, sponsored by the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists (NYSSA), in conjunction with the regional resident poster conference, New York State Conference for Anesthesiology Residents (NYSCARF).
Some resident elect to spend one month rotations engaged in research. For the select few, we offer the opportunity to weave research training right into clinical training. The Resident Research Track was designed to accommodate those residents who do not want to wait until their third year of training to think about research (or until fellowship).
