Residents 2025

Application Opening Soon

What makes us unique?

David C. Holub, M.D.

The University of Rochester Family Residency Program is one of the oldest FM programs in the country. Our program has expanded to 13-13-13 with the intern class that started June 2024. Our program truly offers the best of both worlds – a community-hospital based experience with all of the resources of an academic medical center. Our residents work alongside residents from other specialties, but as essential rather than additional members of those teams. This provides the same volume of experience often claimed by “unopposed” programs.

We provide some of the most in-depth training in psychosocial medicine. P2 is a 5-month longitudinal rotation in the PGY-2 year that includes Psychosocial Medicine and Practice Improvement, directly supervised family meetings, and primary care counseling visits.

We also have one of the most robust OB experiences in the Northeast, with 40-60 deliveries in the 2-month rotation during internship. All continuity deliveries are supervised by family medicine faculty attendings, including family physicians with C-section privileges, and 4 FM-OB Fellows per year.

We stress community involvement and care of the underserved, including a political advocacy track for interested residents. We have 13 different Areas of Concentration to tailor your training to your interests, most of which were created by residents themselves using the resources available in our department and our university. Our Global Health experience is unique in its continuity relationship with small rural communities in southwestern Honduras, and funding to support resident participation in these trips.

Rochester is a fantastic community, with low cost of living and activities to cater to almost any interest. The Finger Lakes region is renowned for its beaches, water sports, and wineries. The Adirondack Mountains are 4½ hours away, and Toronto is 3 hours away. Rochester itself has museums, minor league sports, music, art, and restaurants to rival much larger cities. Your life outside of work will be just as rewarding as your professional development.

Welcome From Chair, Colleen Fogarty M.D., M.Sc.

I appreciate my training at URMC for offering such a customizable curriculum so that I could learn the full breadth of family medicine while still being able to hone my specific interests. It was especially helpful working at a large, academic center where I could learn so much from other specialty-trained residents and attendings. As my career interests shifted over the three years of residency, I never struggled to find supportive people and experiences to guide my journey."

Joel Fandel, MD, (Class of 2023)

What our graduates say...

" I love that I will be able to care for the whole person, the whole family, and work towards the better health of the community in which I live and work; I suppose that relates back to my upbringing in a tight-knit family and small-town community. I feel very lucky to have trained in Rochester, and I am looking forward to staying in the area to continue practicing."

  • We had a great time at yesterday’s community baby shower hosted by Senator Samra Brouk! After an inspiring panel, Ashley, Anni, Rhianna (PGY3), Mackenzie(PGY1) and Dr. Correll (Attending) helped spread the word about HFM’s OB & Maternity services. We also loved catching up with our amazing doula partners, Phyllis and Whitney, as they shared their work. We’re always grateful for the chance to connect with patients and community partners! 💙💛

  • 🔥Another great night out with the squad🔥
Shoutout to our wellness committee for planning a fun-filled night at the arcade! 🕹️🎯

What initially drew you to our program?
I wanted to be closer to home and really liked the city when I visited the week before the rank list was due 😬I also met some of the residents on that trip and everyone was really nice and welcoming.

What’s been the best part of intern year so far?
Inpatient medicine has been the best rotation so far. I learned so much and felt really well supported by my co-residents and attendings. Aside from that, I’d have to say sleeping💤 I’ve been able to rest much more than I did during med school. I think our program does a good job with making our schedule quite manageable.

Something you love about living in Rochester?
You can get anywhere in less than 15mins by car, there’s tons of accessible green spaces and lots of cute cafes and restaurants to explore. Also, I love being able to drive home to Toronto in under 3hrs.
