Program Director

Welcome to the IR Residency at UR!

The Department of Imaging Sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center excels in education, research, and clinical practice within a leading academic health sciences institution. Our clinical programs are primarily conducted at the University of Rochester Medical Center—Strong Memorial Hospital. This tertiary care center, with over 880 beds, includes the URMC Transplant Institute, the free-standing Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong, the James P. Wilmot Cancer Center, the Kessler Level I Trauma Center, and various other specialized referral services, offering training programs in virtually all specialties. Additional imaging services are also provided at East River Road and Highland Hospital.

Our residency program is highly competitive, attracting medical students from across the United States. The volume and diversity of our cases, in conjunction with a dedication to teaching excellence based on the philosophy of graded autonomy, provides our residents with the necessary training to equally pursue careers in academic medicine or private practice.

Our unique practice provides extensive training in transplant, dialysis access, musculoskeletal, non-vascular neuroradiology, and pediatric interventional procedures, including vascular malformations. Our department’s Regional IR section also has an active peripheral arterial intervention program. Our residents enjoy unique opportunities to enhance their academic and professional development. For instance, we operate an online, open-access, peer-reviewed journal where residents can engage in an editorial fellowship during their training.

The Interventional Radiology section at the University of Rochester Medical Center boasts a 40-year legacy of excellence in education, innovation, and research in IR. Our diverse faculty brings a broad spectrum of skills and experiences, nurturing academic curiosity within an equally diverse group of trainees. Many of our past trainees have gone on to practice at prestigious organizations and thriving private and academic institutions across the United States. Recent examples include programs at Mallinckrodt, Michigan, Chicago, Stanford, the University of California, Duke, Emory, and, of course, our own esteemed program at the University of Rochester.

Rochester is a vibrant, medium-sized city in Upstate New York, nestled between Buffalo and Syracuse along the picturesque shores of Lake Ontario. The hospital's catchment area extends across Western New York, from Albany to Buffalo, and down to Northern Pennsylvania. Additionally, the University of Rochester Medical Center is the largest employer in Rochester, New York.

We currently offer two interventional radiology (integrated) positions per year via NRMP. In conjunction with the diagnostic radiology program, we offers an ESIR track. If you have any questions about the Radiology Residency Programs or application process, please email Mary Jane Lander.
