About the Program
Our Mission
With the goal of being counted among the leading otolaryngology departments in the nation, we focus on state-of-the-art clinical care, research and education in an academic medical center. Applicants to our Otolaryngology Residency Program can expect an enlightened, forward-thinking environment that will foster their abilities as a physician, as an agent for ongoing discovery and as a human being. We also promise each resident an open and fair evaluation of his or her application. We especially encourage underrepresented minority physicians to apply.
Our Facilities
The Otolaryngology Residency Program is conducted in two hospitals - Strong Memorial Hospital with 750 beds and Highland Hospital with 220 beds as well as an otolaryngology imaging lab and UR Medicine Otolaryngology, a practice managed by faculty members with facilities near the hospitals and in a high-traffic suburban location. Our Clinton Woods Clinic, Lattimore Pediatric Otolaryngology Clinic , Sawgrass Surgical Center, Wilmot Cancer Institute and our Academic Offices at Strong also support our program.
- Our residents participate in procedures generated by approximately 50,000 outpatient clinic visits per year.
- Surgery volume in the department approaches 4,600 surgical cases each year.
- A full spectrum of clinical cases is available for teaching, and residents finishing the program perform approximately 2,300 cases as operating surgeons.
- Attending surgeons are available for operating room and clinic coverage on a daily basis, as well as for consultative and emergency services throughout the day and night. Direct supervision is always provided to residents in our program.
An important feature of our residency program is that it offers an extensive general training in otolaryngology with exposure to fellowship-trained faculty in all subspecialties available in otolaryngology. This has resulted in a high level of clinical case material and resulting training.
